Volume measurement of uncontrolled waste disposal area. Tinos island, Greece

Challenge

Purpose of this study is to measure the volume of four waste piles of an uncontrolled waste disposal area on the island of Tinos, in two different stages of its restoration. The photogrammetric coverage was made by using a small unmanned aircraft (UAV) that brought a visible spectrum camera of 16MP resolution. Apart from the double coverage of the study area, 16 oblique images (heading increment: 45ο and pitch increment: 10 ο & 20ο), 14 control points (3D GCPs) and 4 check points were used, in order to create an even more accurate georeferenced orthophomap and therefore a preciser DSM.

Results

  • Orthophotomap production. Resolution: 5 cm / px. Area of ​​interest: 90 km²
  • Cloud points and Digital Surface Model (DSM) creation
  • Volume measurement of 4 waste piles of the uncontrolled landfill
  • Create maps and horizontal alignment of the uncontrolled waste disposal area (Scale 1: 200)
  • DSM evolution calculation and measurement of removable volumes during the restoration of the waste disposal area
